California Day

The 4th graders celebrated California's history with a day full of fun-filled activities. I volunteered for the event and enjoyed teaching the students the process of branding a cow. Don't worry-no cows were harmed for our educational advancement! Unfortunately, I was unable to follow Taylor's class from station to station, but did manage to capture a few pictures along the way.

Her class first headed to the MPR for a lesson in Pioneer living. They learned to wash clothes, spin wool, mine for gold, shave their faces with lotion and a butter knife (nice improvision) and make necklaces.

They then arrived at the branding station a little richer and cleanly shaven! We taught them to make a cow hide pattern on the white paper, tear the edges to make it look a little more realistic and then make their initial out of a pipe cleaner. The pipe cleaner was "branded" on the cow hide with a glue gun. Very cute!

Off to square dancing! Again, I was unable to watch the whole thing, but captured these fun pictures from their lesson. There are always a lot of blushing cheeks and noticable tension when the girls have to dance with the boys.

The last station was set up for sand art and tortilla making. The hallway smelled delicious. The students rolled the dough, flattened the tortilla in a fancy press and warmed them on the griddle. Delicious!
It seemed like a lot of the activities were overshadowed by the crazy weather today. The sky was a little eerie this morning, but we never anticipated the heavy rain, thunder and lightening and hail that fell throughout the morning. This is unusaul weather for us and the kids were certainly on edge.
